12 Tactile Contrasts



Tactile contrasts sampler. Different fabrics and techniques were used to create small squares of texture. The squares were arranged in order of softness. In the photo the soft side is on the left.

Row 1.
  1. Strips of calico sewn down the centre and frayed
  2. Calico gathered and stitched down
  3. Squares of felt of decreasing size.
  4. Netting scrunched up up and stitched down
  5. Calico tightly gathered
  6. Kebab sticks under linen scrim
  7. Chopped up kebab stitcks packed tightly under silk

Row 2
  1. Muslin stuffed with fleece on cotton tape strands. The fleece escapes from the muslin
  2. Piles of muslin circles stitched down
  3. Calico loosely gathered
  4. Pin tucks in calico
  5. Netting loosely scrunched up
  6. Knots of dish cloth fabric
  7. Wrapped wire couched down

Row 3
  1. Circles of fine silk, stuffed and stitched down
  2. Strips of woll felt folded in half and stitched down to leave ends free
  3. Tucks in calico stuffed with wool
  4. Strips of calico tightly gathered down the cenre and stitched down.
  5. Tucks in calico, gathered
  6. Strips of calico, knotted at the ends
  7. Strips of fine tapestry canvas, rolled up and stitched down

Row 4
  1. Strips of fine silk woven together
  2. Dish cloth fabric randomly gathered and stitched down
  3. Lots of strips of calico
  4. Calico loosely scrunched up
  5. Rolled up silk
  6. Two types of netting strips knotted and couched down
  7. strip of calico, knotted and couched down into a spiral shape

Row 5
  1. Fine silk quilted over fleece
  2. Strips of calico frayed at the edges and stitched down
  3. Paper discs in netting
  4. Squares of wool felt stitched down
  5. Strips of linen scrim, twisted and stitched down
  6. Small pieces of calico scrunched up and stitched down
  7. Layers of pelmet vilene
