Use of Shape

Drawings based on source images, showing the subdivisions in the pictures. I had to widen the scope of my source material and use pictures of trees that I hadn't previously used to find some interesting divisions of an image.

Some of these drawings were translated into ripped and cut paper designs.

Design Ideas for Resolved Sample

Shape

Many of my design source pictures of trees feature long, narrow shapes so I thought this would be an appropriate shape to explore. The finished sample needs to be approximately 30 by 20 cms or 600 square cms, so the finish sample could be along the lines of

12 x 50
15 x 40

I tried translating some of my sketches to fit this shape:

I wasn't very inspired by any of these initial designs so I tried dividing the long shape into sections and using more than one of my sketches.

I liked the pictures of the trees with a label:

Tree barkTree bark

Developing the idea:

Final design based on the label picture. To make it more interesting I turned the design so that each square was divided on the diagonal rather than vertically.

The samples above have been grouped together with the picture of the tree bark which inspired them.
