09 Stuffing

The combinations of fabric and stuffing is vast so I decided to create mini samplers of various fabric types where each compartment has a different stuffing.

9.1Fabric: man-made felt.
  • Twisted paper strips
  • Strips of calico
  • Knotted string
  • Tissue paper
  • Wadding
  • Shredded gift wrap
  • Beads
  • Shredded paper
Needs chunky filling such as beads to make any surface impression. Good for rounded, padded effects.
9.2Fabric: Nylon chiffon
  • Small pieces of kebab stick
  • Lace
  • Small pieces of string
  • wadding
  • Bubble wrap
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Shredded paper
  • Cotton threads
Good for showing effects created by underlying padding
9.3Fabric: Crystal organza
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Bubble wrap
  • Shredded paper
  • Wadding
  • Cotton threads
  • Shredded gift wrap
  • Plastic canvas pieces
  • Novelty knitting yarn
Good for showing effects created by underlying padding
9.4Fabric: Soft feel packaging.
  • Bubble wrap
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Scrunched-up tissue paper
  • Shredded paper
  • Cut up cotton tape
  • Wadding
  • Beads
  • Shredded gift wrap
Padding can be seen through top fabric but it's more of a soft focus effect.
9.5Fabric: Fine silk
  • Trial pieces of twin needle padding
  • Lace
  • Scruched up tissue paper
  • Wadding
  • Bubble wrap
  • Shredded gift wrap
  • Kebab sticks
  • Shredded paper
Good surface effects created from padding with raised surfaces - the embroidery sample was especially interesting.
9.6Fabric: Netting
  • Wadding
  • Novelty knitting yarn
  • Shredded gift wrap
  • Beads
  • Shredded paper
  • Knitted fabric
  • Kebab sticks
  • Bubble wrap
Completely transparent. Would be good to use if the padding was to be the main feature. Padding can be felt through the netting.
9.7Fabric: Knitted dish cloth
  • Beads
  • Shredded gift wrap
  • Scrunched up tissue paper
  • Calico strips
  • Knotted string pieces
  • Shredded paper
  • wadding
  • Pipe cleaners
Nice surface effect from knitted fabric. Stretches and distorts with underlying padding.
9.8Fabric: Muslin
  • Lace and tissue paper
  • Wadding
  • Knotted string
  • Pieces of plastic canvas
  • Tissue paper
  • Shredded paper
  • Bubble wrap
  • Shredded gift wrap
Fabric gives hints of underlying padding.
9.9Fabric: Firm cotton
  • Beads
  • Wadding
  • Scrunched up tissue paper
  • Plastic canvas pieces
  • Wadding
  • Shredded paper
  • Calico strips
  • Twists of paper
Needs chunky filling such as beads to make any surface impression. Good for rounded, padded effects.
9.10Fabric: Plastic
  • Beads
  • Wadding
  • Scrunched up tissue paper
  • Cotton tape
  • Wadding
  • Shredded paper
  • Shredded gift wrap
  • Pipe cleaners
Completely transparent but texture of padding is muted by plastic.Reminds me of bubblewrap sample in Module 4 where bubblewrap was stuffed with embroidery and hardened with PVA glue.

Other samples:

9.11Twin needle stitching with knitting wool padding
9.11aThe reverse of the sample above looks good too!
9.12Knitting wool threaded through channels in the fabric.
9.13Twin needle stitching with knitting wool padding on knitted dish cloth material.

In the samples below, I used three diffferent fabrics and sewed channels of varying widths and at varying distances apart. I then stuffed the channels with the following:
  • String
  • Tissue paper
  • Novelty knitting yarn
  • Plastic carrier bag
  • Muslin
  • Bubble wrap
  • Various threads with knots along length
  • Beads threaded onto pearl cotton
  • Kebab stick
  • Knitting wool

9.14Fabric: Firm cotton
9.15Fabric: Muslin
9.16Fabric: Silk
