24 Health & Safety

Burning and Melting Fabrics

  • Work on a heat proof surface
  • Work near a sink or have a damp cloth to hand to smother flames
  • Use tongs to hold the fabbric to the flame
  • Don't leave candles unattended
  • Some fabrics can give off fumes so work in a well ventilated room and avoid breathing in the fumes - wear a mask if necessary.
  • Don't work in a draught which might fan flames


Use of Bleach

  • Wear rubber gloves when handling bleach
  • Don't leave in open containers where children or animals can reach them
  • Don't decant bleach into containers that may be mistaken for drinks - always keep in a properly labelled bottle with a child proof top
  • Keep away from eyes and be aware of what to do should bleach come into contact with the eyes


Electrical Equipment

When using the sewing machine I follow these practises:
  • Switch off when not in use to prevent it being accidentally activated

  • Keep liquids away
  • Take regular breaks to stretch to avoid muscle strains
  • Keep fingers out of the needle area when machining without the presser foot


Use of the Iron
  • Don't leave the iron on and unattended
  • Don't leave the iron face down
  • Keep fingers and hands away from the hot plate



General
  • When using electrical equipment, don't cause a trip hazard by leaving trailing wires
  • Don't leave sharp objects such as scissors, ppins and needles lieing around
  • Be careful lifting heavy objects such as sewing machines - adopt the correct posture.
